Ella Fuchs is a singer-songwriter whose music keeps on surprising her listeners. Born, raised and based in Berlin, Ella refuses to settle down for only one genre. While Ella's own songs are a refreshing mix of indie folk and acoustic pop, she plays with elements of soul, rock and in a recent collaboration, even cyberpunk.
Her lyrics reflect on our habits and interactions, telling tales of encounters and relationships that speak universally.

Having played in bands and collaborative projects for over ten years (i.e. ELLA & NIK or her recent one We Kinder), Ella recently started her journey as a solo artist. Suddenly stuck in her died-down hometown, which is usually known to never bore, she had the chance to write, reflect and develop as a singer-songwriter, and during the first wave of the pandemic, wrote a series of songs for her upcoming EP. She started recording shortly after, starting with her debut single, “Amber City”.

The song was released in October 2020 and marks the beginning of her transition into a solo artist. It tells the story of people repeatedly finding one another, only to face being separated again. Ella's plaintive voice accompanied by the soft guitar strumming and the floating cello lines build up an emotional yet powerful tune, the perfect fit for her first single.
The song is accompanied by a video created by Jonathan Göpfert, who beautifully captured Berlin at night, as the singer-songwriter makes her way through the quiet, dark scenery.

Her second single “Good Intentions” is explicitly more political, addressing the shameful motives and sexist tones behind so many of the seemingly “well-intended”, yet unwanted comments that women encounter on the daily.
With the cello and piano arrangements, tension builds up in the song, adding to these feelings of anger, frustration and dissatisfaction. In an old-school, homemade video, Ella introduces and destroys objects and symbols in an attempt to deconstruct an oppressive system of pressured expectations and violations.

In her third single Ella Fuchs is explitely talking about the different situation due to Corona. Realising that masks are not just a metaphor anymore but an important tool to stay safe while she was performing an improvisation, "Behind the Mask" was born. Cello and contrabass underline the folky sound as if they were dancing with the fast guitar strumming. This dance is visualised in the video, where two fencers are duelling each other in a fast choreography that is switching back and fourth to Liesl dancing with a red ribbon under the moon. The whole music video was created by David Marnuse with the help of some voluntary fencers of the ekays Fencing Projects e.V..

Feeling caught up in one's own life, mixing dreams with memories, and getting lost between visions of reality and impressions manipulated by melancholy. That is how „Flickers“ came to life. The song is an attempt at calming down. A breath away panic attacks, providing the space to admit one’s inner feelings, while struggling to stay sane. The tension is underlined by the fast and low playing acoustic guitar keeps the dynamic alive throughout the song. The contrast between the acoustic contrabass and high synth elements carves an atmospheric space for the intimate vocals. „Flickers“ is accompanied by a music videol that reflects on this contrast of remaining quiet on the outside, while a loud sadness on the inside dares to take over. The video was done by Liesl.

Coming to the fifth song of the Amber City EP, we reach "Colours Fading". Finding herself in a dystopia and recognise an unwanted change due to the adaption to the surrounding evolution, Ella learns that is time to realise that neither things can go back to normal, nor will problems simply vanish or can be covered by paint. Instead it is needed to reflect and go back to the roots for a sustainable rebuilding. The present vocals are the strong lead in this song while being accompanied by a dynamic and tight guitar picking. The piano by Liesl subtly joins in and gains more and more confidence through the chorus, supported by Matans drum kit. The whole song gets once again its remarkable depth from Hans Bilger on the beautifully executed double bass. The song comes with a video done by David Marnuse, partly filmed in an aquarium where stunning sea creatures were caught in their own mesmerizing ballet while showing off a wonderful pallet of colours that are not faded yet.

As she continues the production of her EP, Ella has also worked on collaborations, such as the earlier mentioned cyberpunk project, where she was asked to add vocals for the second part of a dystopian electronic fantasy saga by Deux Ex Lumina. The song “D-CØDĒ” reveals a different side of Ella as a musician with an electrifying voice and is hopefully only the first example of many more collaboration and experimentation to come.
